Welllllll...

Okay, I am a big liar - no photo for you today. But the reason why you don't get a photo is because I am having a horribly rough day and right now, I'm at Tiny Dancer's place being looked after. First she took me out for a very lovely dinner, and now we are at her place, drinking champagne and watching trashy tv. More details later, but this is it for now - sorry!!

A brief pause

Gentle readers, we are nearly at the end of the month - I haven't missed a day of posting yet in June, and I fully intend to achieve this goal.  HOWEVER - I am trying to pack up for my impending move, sort out the move logistics, do a very large and time-consuming project for my new job and do my old job as well.  Hmmm - I have gone from having tons of free time to having none at all.  Never fear, my pretties, I won't neglect you, but for the next few days, it's just going to be photos with no yapping from me.  Sorry, I know it will be hard for you live without my bon mots, but do try to be strong - you'll get through it... Somehow...

A very good day (I think)

Gentle readers, I advise you to look up into the sky to see if there's a flaming ball of DOOM headed for the Earth.  No, really.  Because I apparently landed both an apartment AND a lucrative second job today.  And the reason why I say "apparently" is because these things have both actually happened, but I have been so unlucky in the areas of housing and finance for the past year that I am not going to believe either one of them are true until I have a) my new keys and b) my first paycheque both clutched tightly in my grubby little paws.

So the story, in brief, is this:

Home:  a colleague at work told me a friend's apartment in Montmartre would be available for rent in July and that she would put in a good word for me.  It all seemed fine until it fell apart two days ago (cue panic attacks about finding another place to live in just two weeks - aieeee!), but I met with the landlady today and basically begged her to let me rent it until she agreed.  Yes, this is how competitive the market is in Paris - if you want a home and you don't earn eight gajillion euros per month, be prepared to grovel.  And possibly barter one of your kidneys.  My negotiations didn't go quite that far, but I was ready to offer it up.  Just saying.

Work:  I love my job and they pay me well for it, but I just don't have enough hours to really get by.  So I have been looking for something else that has flexible hours and is in English (someone suggested I'd be a great dominatrix and if this doesn't work out, I might just have to think about that...), so the always-awesome Tiny Dancer mentioned me to a firm she's doing some voice work for (as she is a radio journalist and her dulcet tones are in high demand) and I also met with them today and they're giving me a trial run.  So I will be spending the whole weekend recording technical specs to be narrated onto a PowerPoint presentation, but in my current state of poverty, that actually realllllllly sounds like a good time.

So there you go - an extraordinarily lucky day for Miss K.  So lucky that I might just have to buy a lottery ticket as well.  Before I get hit by that meteor, of course...

Things you might see on the Metro

Really?  Lingerie Street?  How have I lived in Paris for a year and a half and never seen this before???

Wednesday, June 15, 2011

Gah!!!

Gentle readers, you know I hate to be predictable, but here I am at yet another bar, blogging by iPhone. Then again, I just found out today that the apartment I am supposed to move into on 1 July isn't going to happen. So, quite frankly, I will require rather large amounts of alcohol to get me through the ordeal of trying to find a new place to live within the next two weeks.  In Paris.  On my - how can I put this? - modest budget. Yep, I'm definitely headed for the cardboard box under the Pont Neuf this time...

Things you might see in a shop #8

Well, it's actually something you might see in a butcher shop, so any of y'all who are vegetarians, stop reading this post now...

Okay, are they gone?  Righty-o, the rest of us can continue on.  It's not that this is particularly gross, but y'know.  Anyway, Tiny Dancer and I had stopped at the boucherie one day to pick up meat for a dish she was making, and we asked the butcher about a particular piece of poultry.  His answer: "Zis?  Zis is Daffy."  Hee!  Ahh, nothing like a little butcher humour.  And come on, is he not the jolliest looking guy you've ever seen?

Things you might see at a café #1

Dear Nice People at Perrier,

As much as I enjoy your fine product (yes, I do occasionally drink beverages other than wine, just not often), there is absolutely nothing about a shrub which has been pruned into the shape of your bottle that is going to make me drink more of the stuff.   I mean, really - what were your marketing people thinking?  (If, on the other hand, you would like to send me some freebies, I would happily accept them and might even get on board with the weird shrubbery.  Maybe.)

Love,

Miss K

Social butterfly? Yeah, kinda...

Gentle readers, I do apologize - I know the content of my posts has been pretty thin this week, but that's because this week has been part of what I like to refer to as the birthday "season".  Which involves going out far too often, drinking far more than is good for me, and basically partying in a manner for which I'm way too old.  Oh well, I'll sleep when I'm dead...

So the week kicked off last Saturday with some leaving drinks for friends who are moving to Berlin.  This carried on until 6am (6am!!!), and here's a little tip for you:  if you ever want to get a photo of yourself in front of Notre Dame with absolutely no one else around, that's the hour to do it.  Sunday and Monday were spent recovering from Saturday.  On Tuesday, English Rose came over for lunch, which started at 1pm and ended somewhere around 7pm and involved three bottles of wine between the two of us.  Well, she is English (the clue is in the name) and I did spend nine years in London, so that kind of drinking is pretty standard for us, really.  Wednesday was spent recovering from Tuesday (what? I'm old, I already admitted that) and on Thursday for my actual birthday, Tiny Dancer took me out for a rather magnificent lunch (which also went on for several hours if you include the subsequent visits to three bars).  Friday was Southern Belle's "welcome back to Paris" drinks, as previously mentioned.  And on Saturday,  The Redhead had a few of the gals over for a fabulous girly brunch/champagne/movie affair and brought in a beautician to give me a much-needed pedicure as an extra birthday treat.

So, needless to say, I am simply shattered.  I am very lucky to have such awesome friends and I am sooo grateful for all my lovely treats, but I have to admit that I'm glad my birthday season is done for the year - my liver (and the few brain cells I have left) just can't take the pace anymore.  I do have a quiet week coming up, but let's see if I can't dig through my recent photos and find some Parisian things to tell you about anyway...

Yes, again...

In an effort to not break my perfect posting record this month (and yes, "perfect" refers to posting every day, not to the actual quality of said posts. I know you are a discerning crowd, gentle readers), this is another placeholder post. I am out at Southern Belle's "return to Paris" drinks and had intended to get home at a respectable hour. Instead, I am still out a bar and blogging from my iPhone AGAIN. Sigh. The summer social season in Paris is taking hold...

Anniversaire

Well, today is my birthday and my gift to myself is being a lazy cow and taking the day off.  Normally my gift to myself involves some kind of travel and/or shoe purchasing, but unfortunately those things are not in the budget this year.  Being a lazy cow, however, is free, so that's what I'm doing...  Back to regular posting tomorrow!

Totally crap outfit of the week #20

Okay, so here's what I don't get:

1) It's 4000 degrees Celcius and you're wearing Uggs.  I actually own a pair of very lovely Uggs and wore them a couple of years ago to take a flight from London to Toronto in December and they were so insanely hot that I had to take them off, and walk around the airport in my socks like a hobo (and yes, answer the awkward security questions about why I was carrying my boots rather than wearing them).  They were so hot that I couldn't bear to put them back on again until we landed and I could go out into the minus 22C weather in Toronto, which is a circumstance when wearing a pair of sheepskin boots was entirely right and proper.  But on a summer day in Paris when it's already 4000C?  How is this okay?  And more to the point, how have her feet not burst into flames???

2)  This is a skinny chick with a hot bod - exactly why is is she wearing underwear in a size more suited to a pre-schooler?  I mean, it's bad enough that the lingerie is black under a pink dress (you can't really tell that from this photo, but in real life, believe me, it was obvious from about 20 metres away), but why is she wearing a size that makes her look like an over-stuffed bratwurst???

Things you might see in a building

I'm not sure why this building has a giant stone bottle in the lobby, but I like it.  Of course, I'd like it a whole lot better if it was actually filled with wine and came with a giant glass, but you know, that's just me...

Let's try that again

Sorry about yesterday - as I said, I'm really going to try to finally achieve a perfect record of posting every day this month, but as I ended up going out with Tiny Dancer and English Rose for a drink yesterday afternoon, it kind of turned into an all-day-and-all-evening sort of thing and I had to blog from the bar on my iPhone just to make the deadline.  (And yes, I felt like a pretentious idiot for doing it - the things I do for you, gentle readers...)

So, as I said, I was at Rosa Bonheur in the Parc des Buttes Chaumont last night - it's  a famous bar in Paris, but you may not have heard of it as it doesn't seem to be in the guidebooks.  It's an interesting combination of outside (picnic tables, everyone chilled out and relaxing) and inside (full-on disco nightclub), not to mention that the park is high up, so you get a spectacular view of the sun setting over the rooftops of Paris.  Highly recommended for a summer evening...

Dammit!

Okay, apologies- this is sort of a placeholder because I am trying to be really good and not miss a day of posting in June, but as I am unexpectedly out at the famous Rosa Bonheur bar in the Parc des Buttes Chaumont tonight, I have to improvise and just post this from my iPhone. So I don't have much to say right now, but will try to add a pretty photo tomorrow...

Things you might see in a shop

Well,  you might see these metal ants.  Unfortunately, they're in the window display of a clothing store and therefore not for sale inside, which is a damn shame, because they are awesome.

Totally crap outfit of the week #19

Sometimes, there are just no words needed...
